Brian was scared to death, not helped by his mental health issues.

And that little scene right there, from the first season of Saturday Night Live when it was supposedly "classic," is a sign of why the show has never really worked. It had one joke with one punchline that might work for about 45 seconds, that just keeps going on and on and on for almost 4 minutes. This just goes to show that even on day one, Saturday Night Live has never been to fill 90 minutes. Every episode of Saturday Night Live since day one has been one or two midly amusing sketches at the beginning, two (sometimes decent) performances by the musical guest, and 75 minutes of filler most of which is absolute dreck.

Given his upbringing, his talent, drugs, and, later, Landy ... those issues are not surprising. I believe that Brian was a nice, shy, pretty typical kid from Cal who was gobbled up by success and the expectations by himself and others.
