Article 1. Whether I am the Son of God?
Objection 1. It would seem that you are not the Son of God. For you are not able to command these stones to become loaves of bread for your hunger. Or else you are unwilling to do so. Therefore you cannot be the Son of God.
Objection 2. Further, as Son of God you would be able to throw yourself down from this height. For it is written, "He will command his angels ... and with their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a loaf, I mean a stone. Therefore, if you have come to show the world who you are but will not do such a demonstration, you must not be the Son of God.
Objection 3. Further, all the kingdoms of the world owe you, as Son, their homage. And if you worship me, I will hand them over to you. Otherwise how can you be the Son?
On the contrary My food is to do the will of my Father in heaven. And if you dash this body against hearts of stone, I will raise it up in thee days. And my kingdom is not of this world. Therefore, keep your little kingdom, in a lake of fire!
I answer that, If I do not perform my Father's works, do not believe me; but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize (and understand) that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.
Reply to Objection 1. It is written: "One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God." And since you are not God, what have I to do with you?
Reply to Objection 2. Further, it is written, "You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test."
Reply to Objection 3. It is written: "The Lord your God shall you worship and him alone shall you serve." Therefore, get away, Satan!
