Re: Magnanimity as a vice - MacIntyre

Is the point factually correct, ie would the Church call (sinful) pride what Aristotle calls virtue?

Magnanimity as a vice - MacIntyre

I want to argue that just as the traditional medical virtues had a special status, so those virtues have become problematic in a special way. There is a social process by which what have been virtues in one social and cultural context can become vices in another. I am not here referring to the proc...

Re: The archbishop of the U.S. military services says US troops could refuse Greenland orders

There are a number of entities, large and small, the nestle under the wings of the big powers, bask in their protection, and then do as they please. Canada, for example, through the 1960's or so was a minor player in its own prosperity. Now, not so much. I found it telling that Denmark sent 17 (?) ...

Re: Children Growing Up Too Quickly

Eight or 9 years for an adult isn't all that much of a big deal, but... that does a number on a child When I first joined this forum (the older URL), I was a teenager in school - with the mind of one. Now I've graduated from college, and look at adult responsibilities ahead. How time flies. I appre...

Re: The archbishop of the U.S. military services says US troops could refuse Greenland orders

I have no idea where this "Trump is going to invade Greenland" idea came from; Trump has ... repeatedly said the exact opposite, that he wants to acquire it by negotiation. From Trump, you can get yes, and no, and a secret third thing. You'll also find him whining like a petulant child fo...

I don't know what that is, either. Come on, guys, quit making me look things up.
A list of indulgenced prayers.

Raccolta is the traditional one.
Enchiridion is the reformed (post-V2), current one.

We used to have a Protestant here who would make claims like that with (apparently) a straight face.
What do the Fathers and exegetes and saints say about it?

Re: Why is incest wrong?

Some small level of incestuous marriages happen in India. Some of it is Muslim, and some of it is South Indian Hindu. It's very rare in my state now due to modernisation, but traditionally many people would marry their cousins. In a neighbouring state, women would traditionally marry maternal uncles.

Why is incest wrong?

Title says all. Of course I accept the Divine law, I'm only looking for reasons I tried to search by myself, in the Summa. https://www.newadvent.org/summa/3154.htm#article9 Now sexual intercourse with women related by consanguinity or affinity is unbecoming to venereal union on three counts. First, ...

Re: Let loving hearts enthrone Him!

Merry Christmas everyone!

I prefer the Mass during the day/morning of Christmas
My reasoning is that worship is an act of the will (?), so I'd rather do it mindfully instead of when I'm half-asleep and yawning during Mass.

Re: Australia's Social Media Ban

Hi. In my younger years, the immovable "land phones" were common. Then came the simple mobile phones, and then smartphones. My school completely forbade the use of mobile phones in class. (If at all a student had brought it, it would be taken, and returned at the end of the day). I liked t...

Re: Australia's Social Media Ban

parents need help in raising kids in our media-soaked society... Similarly, I am all in favor of schools banning cell phones, The law is a teacher, and that is one of its purposes. In terms of enforcement, BTW, some schools require phones to be turned in when the student arrives. Granted there are ...

I'm a Syro Malabar Christian from its heartland.
Happy to hear good words about it.

Unfortunately, the process of secularisation is gradually seeping in. Among other things.

Sleep and Sunday obligation

If I go to mass on Sunday, I won't get sleep commensurate to my daily activity. I can make it, but I'll be sleepy during training. Does that excuse me from the obligation?
