Re: Chicago Celebrates Pope Leo XIV

His election seems providential and can't be a coincidence. Our country is at a tipping point spiritually, morally, politically, and culturally.

Either there will be a revival, or he was elected to shepherd us through some very rough waters. Probably both.

Re: Gather: Catholic Hymnal... aka: "Marty Haugen's Modest Hits"

We recently changed parishes for a few reasons. One is that our new parish plays only traditional hymns. Haven't heard one of the hippie Marty H. or similar songs in the several weeks we've been members; one step closer to Heaven on Earth.

Re: AI Doomerism

No possibility of that, I think. I cannot think of a job that could possibly be done by AI without constant human debugging of the AI. I use AI to write code for some electronic devices I build (Arduino controllers). Early on the code had a lot of debugging. Now, little to none. In fact, it has got...

Re: Was Billy Graham a False Teacher?

I always admired Billy Graham, even after I became Catholic. I once went to one of his pilgrimages late in his ministry. He stressed a message of "Having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ" and even said, "You may have been baptized and/or confirmed, but don't know Jesus."...

Re: Catholic and dealing with transgender relatives

We have six. When our oldest child had the MMR vaccine there was an immediate change in his behavior. He became hypersensitive so loud noises and later started tippy-toe walking - for years. There were other things, but those stand out. As he grew older, he was obviously "different" from o...

As slow as the Vatican is at updating their website, its still an order of magnitude faster than my company's IT department.

Re: God is cruel, he is arbitrary, he plays favorites.

You are blaming God for things that He didn't do. 1) We have freewill and so do other people. If they make bad choices that affect you, that's on them, not God and not you. 2) We choose how we respond to every situation. He can give us the grace to respond appropriately, but we must ask for it. 3) I...

Re: Top Ten bands

Criteria - 1) strictly bands and not individuals or individuals that led a band like Jimi Hendrix or Tom Petty. 2) overall body of work, total album sales, the # of songs that charted off those albums or the album itself achieved Gold+ status. This eliminates bands who had one stellar album and live...

Re: Music director question

Our Parish in Little Rock had a guy who wasn't Catholic as our music director. Music was excellent and orthodox except for once a year, at Easter, when the baptismal promises renewal and sprinkling of water rite. They always sang the song, with a New Orleans Jazzy flavor, "Wading in the Water&q...

Reminds me of the response from teachers when I asked how to spell a word, "Go look it up in the dictionary."

Re: Bullying

As a priest, can I comment on the "blind eye to the dysfunction" part? Sometimes we're just not aware; more often, there's not a whole lot we can do about it. It turns out to be very hard to change people. All we can do most of the time is try to nudge them in the right direction. Reminds...

Re: Bullying

One thing that I learned from my bullying experiences is that bullies are very insecure at heart, and they are lashing out from their own pain. I don't think that is true in general; some people are just cruel and cannot empathize with anyone else, and some people are just monsters by nature. I've ...

Re: All religions are a path to God?

I frequently now attend but am having difficulty contending with the idea that there are SO many different religions, and I see them separate from one another. Doesn't Jesus say we all should become one. An ex roman catholic priest (now doing episcopal sermons) told me that roman catholics think th...

Re: Charismatic Renewal

My MIL (RIP) was very Catholic, orthodox in her faith, and also very charismatic. From my point of view, the style of worship has a strong emotional component along with physical manifestations of that emotional "connection" (i.e., raising up of arms, eyes-closed with head tilted back, etc...

I hear people all the time say “OMG” or “Lord help” (including Priests).

Do either of these qualify?

Re: All religions are a path to God?

We are obligated to give the most charitable interpretation of what the Pope says and assume he's being misunderstood or taken out of context.

That being said, I'm running out of charity these days.
