In the Land of the Rococo Marxists

Post by Highlander »

As Tom Wolfe wrote in his 2000 essay, “In the Land of the Rococo Marxists,” “An intellectual is a person knowledgeable in one field who speaks out only in others.”

That is so, so, so, ...... so good.

Tom Wolfe was brilliant; he was more or less conservative and made many contributions, including coining the term "radical chic" to describe the tendency of wealthy elites to try to "prove their authenticity" by supporting extreme leftist movements, even, or maybe especially, when the radical movement in question would likely slit the throat of the wealthy patron. And he coined the term "me decade" to describe the 70s.

One interesting fact is that, as far as I know, Wolfe is the only author to have a non-fiction book ("The Right Stuff") and a book of fiction ("The Bonfire of the Vanities") adapted into a movie.
If you ever feel like Captain Picard yelling about how many lights there are, it is probably time to leave the thread.

Whew! I've gotta save this for later.

I love his non-fiction stuff. I hated the one fiction work I read - A Man in Full.

What Riverboat said.

I just started my day at work and looked at the beginning of the article.... yeah, this is good. I'll have to come back to it later today.
Thanks for sharing.

I'm 2/3 through reading this, and wishing I could get this in print form. I poked around the 'net and found other sites with this essay. I found a snarky response called "A Wolfe in Hack's Clothing" on Slate. That's rich, coming from them. They wouldn't know a sheep from a wolf because the wolf (the one with the sheep in his mouth) would have identified as the wooly creature to get closer to them, and not for affirmation, either.

No name is given, which is just as well. Whoever it was, criticized Wolfe (the one with the Birkenstocked deconstructionist in his mouth) for "plagiarizing" his previous works: "Wolfe doesn’t merely recycle clichés from the right-wing press. He recycles himself." Quelle horreur! A writer who uses his own words! Twice!

Well, if I could write half as well as he did, I'd be quoting myself, too, and drinking a tumblerful of bourbon while I'm at it. If there isn't already a statue of Tom Wolfe somewhere in our fruity plain, I'd be happy to spearhead this project. Most any university will do for its location.
