I think that (assembly language being specific to the architecture of the computer) was always true.
Thank you for your patience as I build the board. I have about 1/16 to go.

Yes, but there was one main one BAL which was used for the IBM computers, but now the old IBM architecture is basically extinct, so BAL can no longer be used.

I think we're talking past each other. :-D I am using assembly to refer to a language that resides just above machine code, not a specific iteration thereof. Once you know how to use one variety it's not hard to pick up a new one. That's true of programming in general.

I know astonishingly little about AI, but I have friend who is deep into it. I was bemoaning the death of cursive writing and the potential loss of a massive swath of history as humans lose the knowledge of how to read it (an other human created fonts). He stated that is was no problem since AIs already can "translate" cursive and any other font into any other font. Thus, no need for cursive.

Probably true. But all this means is people are willing to let a machine do its thinking for them. Students used to learn by writing and organizing thoughts on paper. Cursive simply allowed one to do this more efficiently.

Incidentally, you seem to be making up for lost time all at once. I am always gratified to see someone, old-timers and newbies, revive threads and breathe new life into this site.

Some would replace "new life" with "stale air", but I appreciate the sentiment.
